Santa Cruz es la capital económica de Bolivia y también un importante punto de unión con otros destinos del continente, gracias a su privilegiada y estratégica ubicación geográfica. Y precisamente, como cada vez somos más los turistas que llegamos a esta ciudad debido a alguna escala de avión, nos decidimos a conocerla y pasear por sus calles.

Santa Cruz is the economic center of Bolivia and it is also an important point of union with other destinations of the continent, thanks to its privileged geographical location. So, as we arrived to this city because of a scale of our aircraft, we decide to visit it and walk around its streets.

Plaza 24 de Septiembre

La Plaza 24 de Septiembre se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad y en su alrededor podemos visitar algunos de los edificios más representativos, la mayoría de ellos de estilo colonial. Las construcciones más importantes son la Catedral Metropolitana (o Basílica Menor de San Lorenzo, cuyo altar principal fue tallado en plata), la Casa Municipal de la Cultura y la Alcaldía.

Plaza 24 de Septiembre is located in the center of the “Casco Viejo” (old sector of the city). Bordering the Plaza one encounters the Metropolitan Cathedral (or Basílica Menor de San Lorenzo, whose main altar was carved in silver), the Municipal Cultural Center, the Mayor’s Office and other buildings that maintain their colonial architecture.

El paseo artesanal La Recova, a tan sólo media cuadra de la plaza principal, ofrece a los turistas productos y souvenirs típicos del país, como artesanías hechas en cuero, semillas y madera.

The handicraft fair La Recova, just half a block from the main square, offers tourists products and typical souvenirs of the country as handicrafts made in leather, seeds and wood.

Para los amantes de las plantas y los animales, recomendamos una visita al Jardín Botánico –donde se pueden apreciar más de mil especies de plantas y árboles– y al Zoológico Noel Kempf Mercado –en donde podemos observar ejemplares de la fauna local en condición de semilibertad–.

For those who love plants and animals, we recommend a visit to the Botanical Garden –where we can see more than a thousand species of plants and trees– and the Zoo Noel Kempf Mercado –where we can see animals in semi-freedom’s conditions–.

Si visitamos la ciudad en verano y con niños, los inmensos parques acuáticos Aqualand y Playland nos esperan con piscinas gigantes con oleaje artificial.

If we visit the city in summer and with children, huge water parks Aqualand and Playland are waiting for us with giant pools with artificial waves.

Para quienes decidan quedarse unos días adicionales, sugerimos realizar los tours a las misiones jesuíticas y a Los Espejillos, donde podremos disfrutar de baños en ríos cristalinos.

For those who decide to stay a few extra days, we suggest the tours to the Jesuit missions and to Los Espejillos, where we will find a series of natural waterfalls and pools of crystalline water in which we can splash and swim.
